Is it that time of year already!?

Holy Smokes this year has gone fast!  I'm finding it hard to believe we're only a few days away from Thanksgiving and the official start of the Christmas season.  We've had such a mild, warm autumn that it didn't really seem like autumn, until last week when it finally started getting chilly.  NOW it seems like autumn, but the beginning of autumn, not almost at the end of it!

That probably made no sense.  Forgive me.  It's morning, and it's Monday.

Anyhoo, things have been kinda crazy at Casa Warren, with Husband sprinting towards the finish line.....graduation!  Husband will be graduating with his Masters Degree December 17th (knock on wood).  If he doesn't go postal and end up murdering his thesis committee with a hacksaw, that is.  Hang in there honey, it's almost over!

In order to try and get more in a holiday mood, I've found an awesome internet radio channel playing all vintage Christmas tunes.  I *love* classic, traditional Christmas songs, and nothing irritates me more than hearing modern pop versions of classic songs, or worse, *new* modern pop Christmas songs.

Sorry Mariah, Justin, and any other modern pop stars who have released the obligatory Christmas album.  Gimme my Bing and Doris and Gene Autrey, thanks.

However, I have two, and only two, exceptions to the modern Christmas song exclusion:
  1. Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer, and
  2. The 12 Pains of Christmas.

Hey, I'm a woman.  I'm allowed to have exceptions to the rule.  Especially when they're my rules.  Live with it.  :)

Anyway, to get into a vintage Christmas mood, check out the stations available on Live 365.  This particular station the link takes you to is called "Ralphie's Radio"  (Ralphie from A Christmas Story, get it) but if you just type in "vintage christmas" in the search engine it will bring up more stations to choose from.

Happy listening! :)

  1. I'm the same way. I can't stand the new Christmas song versions. Blech!

This year HAS gone by fast. But I'm looking forward to the holidays!

  2. I am fascinated with holiday music, and like you I gravitate to crooner / doowop / bigband / ratpack...

But I'm willing to leave the door open for new artists, too. You can easily overload on sap from any era, though. But isn't that part of the appeal? That the difference between sentimental and annoying is so thin?

  3. I love the oldies, but have to admit I am also a big fan of Wham and Mariah! Can't go past a video with big hair and bad jumpers, and I have always thought Mariah's was quite old fashioned and boppy :)

  4. I have a difficult time with modern singers, period - breathy, whiny, nasally - ugh. (Wow, I sound just like my grandparents and parents used to!)

    Congrats to your husband.

Also, hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

  5. I'm afraid to say I actually like the Bob Dylan Christmas album. It pitches Christmas at a really depressing level, which I think is a good thing ….

Now don’t go all girly on me, hear me out…

It’s like when someone builds something up to such a degree that it can never hope to live up to the expectations (i.e happy jolly Christmas songs) where as when your expectations are set low you can cope with even the worse Christmas (how much lower can your expectations get then Bob Dylan massacring Christmas songs). After a couple of hours of listening, the dog running off with the Turkey, the Christmas tree lights catching light and burning down the house, your partner giving you a handkerchief as your only present (with the wrong initials on) all can be taken in your stride….

Any one for a Leonard Cohen Christmas Album, I think the in-laws* have invited themselves around and insisting that every one goes vegetarian for the festive season…..

    * Please note no in-laws were hurt during the production of this blog comment. Any derogatory remarks were purely for attempted comedy affect and I can report that my in-laws are not in fact vegetarian and apart for a passion for giving really naff presents, very nice people….
