What else is new.....well, I'm re-discovering my love of all things vintage and old fashioned.  Not that it ever goes away, but sometimes other things take precedent.  But since starting up here on Blogger, I've found an awesomely large community of folks who have the same love, and it's refreshing to know there's so many people out there that value and want to hang onto those vintage things worth preserving.  Not that I get overly rose-colored-glasses over the past; I'm fully aware of the bad parts too.  Civil and equal rights are something that was severely lacking in the "good ol' days," and I don't want to return to a time of bigoted ignorance.  I don't think anyone who claims to love vintage does.  But there's so much to celebrate of them "good ol' days" as well, and I commend anyone who is able to support the cause!

This week I've been able to expand my old movie collection, thanks to TCM and our trusty VCR.  Yes, we still have to use a VCR to record stuff on the TV....sue me.  :)   I got to capture two Ginger Rogers movies I'd never seen before:  Rafter Romance and 20 Million Sweethearts, both from 1934.  They were absolutely delightful, of course!  But I'm biased on the Ginger front.  :)   And, tonight I'm recording The Harvey Girls with Judy Garland, Here Comes the Groom with Bing Crosby, and Breakfast at Tiffany's with Audrey Hepburn.  Five new movies in one week for free....can't beat that!

Work is going well, and I even have a new piece of office furniture.  No, it's not a plush leather recliner, much to my chagrin.  It's merely a table with a hutch/shelf for the massive 3-ring binders that are now my life in my new position, but it fills the room up a little more and makes it feel a little more cozy.  Well, as cozy as generic office furniture can be anyway!  I'd much prefer something like this...

....but I'll take what I can get, as long as it keeps me employed!

That's it for now kiddo's....thanks for reading me, and all of your lovely comments!

  1. Thank you for bestowing this award on me and exempting me from the 35 questions as I am already doing them for Gingeyginge.

I'd love that desk too, especially with that good old fashioned typewriter on it. I much prefer an old fashioned typewriter to a new fangled computer keyboard of today - especially those horrid flat laptop keyboards which I hate! There's nothing like the sound of the bell as you do a return on a proper typewriter - lol - those were the days.

  2. You're most welcome! :)

I love the aesthetics of the old typewriters better, but for practicality I have to go in favor of a modern keyboard. BUT...I once stumbled across a project someone did where they took an old typewriter and converted it to work with their computer. If I had unlimited money to outfit my home office in a completely retro look, I'd jump on this in a heartbeat! Here's a link to that project if you're interested in taking a looky: http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/underwood/

  9. Gingerella - thanks so much! It is just good to know that the stuff I post is of interest... hope to keep things interesting - again, with Ginger as the topic, no worries there! I will grab the questions and post on 'G-ology' soon! AAAAAND, I thought I was following you, but for some reason never got 'on board'... will change that very shortly!

Also, congrats on YOUR award - you have a very nice blog here! Those 'pin-up' pics at the top are awesome! I better not try to add anyhting like that to G-ology, tho...I get in enough trouble with my wife just because of Ginger!! :-]

  11. ...It is great to know there are actually quite a few Gingerologists out there!

As for VHS, that is my recording media of choice, also! Old school, baby! I do have a 'combo' deal with a DVD burner...so I just record whatever from TCM with a VHS tape, and then burn over to DVD (and keep the VHS copy as 'back-up')...typically works very well. Is it HD or Blu-Ray quality? well, no, but it is typically pretty good for a movie from the 30s or 40s...

  12. Many congrats on your lovely blog award, sweet dear! I received that same one from a friend of mine, and had a blast trying to come up with just one word for the answers.

Regarding your question about what style(s) I was trying for with my hot rollers (which didn't even get hot enough before they started to omit that dreadful odor) for me to place in my hair, I didn't have an exact style in mind, to be honest. I thought that the first time around I'd just see how my (very fine) hair took to them, and then after knowing what kind of results they (rollers) created, I'd decide what styles to create down the road.

Ideally, I'd like a lovely curly style with a vintage vibe (I tend to dress mid 40s to mid 50s style, so a versatile hairdo that would work with fashion inspired, or from, those years would be the bees knees! :D) that I could reproduce and sport often. As the hot roller set is going back and I don't know when I'll get a different one, I'll have to hold off on trying to style my hair with hot rollers for a while. But when I do get a set that works, I'd be happy to blog about the sort of looks I create with it.

Now in terms of pin curls, which I have done before, here are my tips (I don't do them often though because I'm allergic to the nickel that's in the clips I use for to do them) for getting them to work with bone straight, fine hair:

-Start with dry hair, which you then spray with a mixture of water and a sturdy styling product of your choice (a little spray gel or some flex-hold hairspray for example). About One part styling product to 10 parts water is what I've used. Just mist your hair lightly, you want it to be damp, but not dripping wet. Brush or comb your damp hair so that it's free of any tangles.

-Section off your hair into at least four quadrants of the head and use a clip/barrette/etc to hold the hair that you're not working on in each section up and out of the way.

-I don't use bobby pins (which are apt to leave creases, especially in fine hair) to hold my pin curls in place, I use double pronged hair clips (sometimes called alligator clips), which I usually buy from my local drug store (any beauty supply store should have them, too. Here's a photo I found online of the type I mean: http://i708.photobucket.com/albums/ww82/cheesetart/aligatorhairpindoubleprong.jpg).

-Begin rolling small locks of hair up into pin curls. If you have trouble with the ends sticking out, pick up some perm papers from a hair dresser/beauty supply, or well stocked drug, store and use them on the ends of the sections you pin/clip up.

-Once you've rolled all the hair in one section of your head and are happy with how it looks, let down the clip for the next section and proceed to roll the hair there. Continue on like this until all of your hair has been curled.

    {I have to split my reply into two halves, Google limits the number of characters you can use per comment.}

  13. -Despite being fine (and not having a much bulk at all!), my hair takes a while to dry, so I usually leave the curls in for several hours or overnight. If I sleep on them, I wrap a large scarf or bandanna over my head to protect the curls from getting too crushed while I sleep (and I sleep on my side, not on my back).

-When I take them out, I work from the bottom curls (the ones closest to my neck) upwards, unrolling them slowly and carefully, so as to not kink the shape of the curl.

-Once all the curls have been taken down, I spray them with a light mist of hair spray. If I don't do this and try to brush them out, my hair just about straightens back out entirely! The hair spray helps to keep a sense of wave to my hair.

-I brush slowly and gently with a flexible plastic tipped brush, making sure that I leave a bit of curl to the wave (I know some gals prefer just to have a wave, but I like some curl to my hair).

-Once I'm happy with the brush out, I spritz a little more hair spray over my whole head and then proceed to style my hair as desired. I often just part it to one side and clip some of it up with a pretty floral clip. Other times I might incorporate a front "bang/fringe" style roll or a pair of Victory rolls. Whatever strike my fancy that day really :)

I hope these tips help you out too, honey. I'd love to hear how your next pin curl set turns out if you do put them into practise.

    Have a wonderful day!
    ♥ Jessica

  14. JWalker: I do hope to get one of those VHS/DVD combo recorders someday...I've been leary about how well they work but it sounds like you've had good success! I have many VHS tapes of stuff I recorded off AMC in the early 90's, and the tapes are so old I'm worried about losing the content. Some of the movies I have on them haven't been released on DVD (that I can find) so I'm extra anxious to preserve them! As an example, I have Ginger's Chance At Heaven, Carnival Boat, Romance In Manhattan (one of my all-time favorite Ginger movies), and In Person that I don't want to lose.

Jessica: wow, thank you for the long list of tips! Maybe when I'm on vacation over Christmas break I'll have time to try pincurls again. I think my problem in the past was using too-wet hair...my hair has thinned out so bad that when it's wet it's literally like trying to work with individual strands of hair.

However, I'm fortunate that my hair holds curl well, because it's naturally curly (read: frizzy). The problem is holding shape; if I want a specific "style" I have to use hair spray so thick I end up with helmet head. And then if it's really windy out, forget it.
